How Do Network Speed Tests Work?

Speed Test Triggered

A speed test is triggered from the ACS Device Management. This starts the process of connection setup, data transmission, and measurement.

ACS Contacts CPE

The ACS contacts the CPE and requests a connection to be established between two points in order to measure the speed of the router.

TR 143 Begins Speeds Test

The TR-143 protocol begins the speed test and records the results. The data is then sent back to ACS Device Management, ready to be analyzed.

CPEs Return Test Values

The CPEs return the values of the test, which are then analyzed and compared to expected performance. This allows for the identification of any areas that need improvement.

What is TR-143?

TR-143 is constructed to assist operators in distinguishing whether an issue lies within the operator’s network or a customer’s home network. Through its TR-143 technical recommendation, the Broadband Forum established guidelines for active monitoring and diagnostics titled “Enabling Network Throughput Performance Tests and Statistical Monitoring”. This advice was created to examine link performance in real-time through a TR-069 Endpoint probe.
